The Transformative Impact of the CCA Associates mentorship program on my Arbitration Practice
By Scott L. Evans*
The College of Commercial Arbitrators Associates Mentorship Program has been a cornerstone of my commercial arbitrator development. From the outset, the program provided me with an unparalleled platform to deepen my understanding of arbitration practices and refine my skills. Its structured approach and access to a wealth of resources have significantly accelerated my growth and success as an arbitrator.
A defining feature of the Associates Program is the mentorship it offers. I am blessed with several actively engaged CCA mentors. Notably, my “official” CCA mentors, Gene Commander and Holly Stein Sollod, have been indispensable to my maturation as an arbitrator. Their willingness to share insights, experiences, and guidance has been instrumental in navigating complex arbitration matters. These seasoned arbitrators have not only imparted valuable procedural and substantive knowledge but have also demonstrated the importance of professionalism and integrity in arbitration. Their ongoing support and encouragement are now evolving into the crucial sponsorship stage as they present opportunities and make introductions for me.
Another invaluable resource has been the CCA Guide to Best Practices in Commercial Arbitration. This guide has been a godsend, serving as a comprehensive reference that I rely on frequently. Its practical advice and detailed insights have helped me address challenges and ensure the highest standards in my arbitration practice.
Through the Associates Program, I have had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, participate in educational sessions, and collaborate with other aspiring and experienced arbitrators. These interactions have broadened my perspective, enhanced my ability to manage arbitration proceedings, and solidified my confidence in handling complex cases. The program has also provided me with all the tools necessary to write detailed and comprehensive awards, ensuring clarity and precision in my decisions.
Because of the program, my commercial arbitration practice has grown substantially. I have arbitrated significant commercial and employment disputes, typically managing three to five ongoing arbitrations at any given time. I have had the honor of serving as the arbitrator for matters ranging from a dispute at a nuclear weapons lab in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to a very contentious trade secret matter involving two well-known financial brokerage firms.
The Associates Program is more than a training and diversity initiative; it is a community that fosters excellence and collaboration among arbitrators. The relationships I have built within this community are invaluable, and I am deeply grateful for the guidance and camaraderie of the CCA membership. Their belief in my potential has been a constant source of motivation and has propelled me toward achieving my professional goals.
In conclusion, the Associates Program has been an indispensable part of my journey as an arbitrator. It has accelerated my experience, sharpened my skills, and enriched my practice. I am honored to be part of an organization that is so committed to advancing the field of commercial arbitration and fostering the next generation of arbitration professionals. My gratitude to the College of Commercial Arbitrators is boundless, and I look forward to contributing to the community as my practice continues to evolve.
